PLEASANT VIEW, Tenn. — Six teenagers, including a 1-year-old infant, were killed in a single-car crash early Sunday morning on a freeway in central Tennessee, authorities said. Two adults were injured, one of them critically.

When emergency crews responded to the scene of the crash in Robertson County around 2 a.m., they found a car overturned, said Brent Dyer, chief of the Robertson County Office of Emergency Management Services.

First responders found six girls, ages 1 to 18, who had been thrown from the car and could not be rescued, Dyer said in a news release.

A woman who was ejected from the car was hospitalized in critical condition, officials said. One person suffered minor injuries, officials said.

Authorities said a second vehicle with the driver uninjured was found near the damaged car. The dead and injured were not immediately identified. It was not immediately clear if they were related.

The crash happened on I-24 near Pleasant View and Springfield, and a portion of the highway was closed for several hours before reopening later Sunday. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

The county’s Office of Emergency Management coordinates professional mental health and counseling services for emergency responders.

“Our office recognizes the incredible difficulty of this scenario,” a Dyer news release said.
