Ecopetrol’s Innovation and Technology Center – ICP, located in Pietecusta, Santander, has begun the first phase of its modernization project, with the aim of strengthening and promoting energy transition, decarbonization and biodiversity protection programs and improving the efficiency of its research processes. .

The development will integrate the science and testing capabilities of the Innovation and Technology Center – ICP, with the use of state-of-the-art technology, envisaging an investment of US$32 million equivalent to $133,000 million in its technology infrastructure. Throughout the period between now and 2026.

At this initial stage of the project, four basic action areas have been established: technological modernization, implementation of clean energy for its operation, development of advanced skills and acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment.

“In its 38 years of life, the ICP has become the engine of science, technology and innovation of Ecopetrol. Through this modernization process, we want to support its adaptation to emerging carbon capture technologies, modernize experiments in its areas and stimulate cutting-edge capabilities. Its human team responding to the 2040 Strategy: Energy Transformation and anticipates future challenges,” said Ricardo Roa, President of Ecopetrol.

Ecopetrol, on the other hand, has initiated the first action front: technological modernization, by combining two robots in charge of distributing samples to laboratories. This activity is complemented by the implementation of automated systems operated by a team of ICP scientists and collaborators, with the aim of streamlining work in experimental areas and improving efficiency in research activities and knowledge generation.

In 2024, the construction of a multifunctional area with three pilot plants is planned, with the aim of promoting projects for carbon capture, the production of synthetic fuels and the conversion of biomass, recycled plastic and other waste to heat. Generates energy with low emissions.

The transformation roadmap also contemplates structural adjustments so that the ICP operates with cleaner energy sources and reduces its consumption of electrical energy. Solar panels are planned to be installed, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 2,120 tonnes in the coming years. In addition, a water treatment and reuse system will be implemented with the aim of reducing water withdrawals and discharges for industrial purposes.

The training will focus on issues such as hydrogen production and utilization; carbon capture and storage; Biofuels; Application of Metaverse for its application in artificial intelligence and scientific processes.
