Fiber Optics Positioned as Most Used Technology for Fixed Internet Connectivity in Q3 2023 – News – Oversight Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications

Penetration of fixed internet service is progressing in the country and mainly due to the recorded speed of connections of this service through fiber optics. Thus, by the end of the third quarter of 2023, fiber optics reached 51.94% of total connections, surpassing cable modem (42.20%), becoming the most used technology in fixed Internet service, according to the agency Private Investment Supervisor in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL).
According to the computer tool Punk (https://punku.osiptel.gob.pe/), operating companies reported to OSIPTEL 1,782,048 fixed internet connections with fiber optics at the end of the third quarter of the year. This shows a growth of 72.39% compared to the same period in 2022 and has multiplied by almost 30 compared to September 2018.
Although fiber optic connections grew throughout the country, Lima and Callo recorded the greatest improvement (+75.30%). Meanwhile, the growth of other sectors was 68.66%, in this group, Ica (100,743), Lambayeque (95,036), Piura (72,626); La Libertad (63,139) and Áncash (52,028), regions with the highest number of fiber optic connections at the end of the third semester.

Claro and Movistar’s share of the fiber optic market is shrinking

According to the analysis of information on fixed Internet connections using fiber optics at the end of the first quarter of 2023, at the level of fiber optic market share carried out by the OSIPTEL Regulatory Policies and Competition Directorate, Win group (24.47%) and company Wow (17.97%) together represented 42.44% of this market. Individually, both the companies registered a higher share compared to Claro (its share fell by 1.17 percentage points to 12.87).
Meanwhile, Movistar’s participation was 32% of the market in the third quarter of this year, 8.53 percentage points lower than in the third quarter of 2022.
