Food and sustainability go hand in hand at the 19th International Postharvest Technology Course

The organizers of the 19th International Course on Post-harvest Technology and Minimal Processing of Fruits and Vegetables, which started its face-to-face sessions this month and today, have proposed to contribute knowledge among industry experts for better success. Challenges that threaten the fundamental work so that the products of the field reach the consumers in the best condition.

The way food is produced and distributed and consumed represents the largest part of its environmental footprint, around 30%. In this framework, food and sustainability go hand in hand. This is one of the aims of bringing together 43 instructors from seven countries and 25 institutes and research centers at the University of Polytechnic (UPCT) to participate in this meeting, which has already brought together more than 1,500 participants. The course addresses essential and readily applicable knowledge of conventional and innovative techniques for handling and processing of whole and minimally processed fruit and vegetable products and improving their technical and metabolic behavior. Physicochemical analysis of quality of fruits and vegetables; Physiological determinants in fruits and vegetables; Safety in a controlled atmosphere; Ethylene absorption in fruit and vegetable products and modified atmosphere packaging are some of the presentations that will be held during these two days.

The duration of this UPCT degree is 45 hours, of which 30 are focused on theoretical content, which can be done ‘online’, and the other 15 are held over two face-to-face days. These include technical visits to institutions in the field and hands-on demonstration workshops at the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering.

Recent innovations, including water management, in the production and packaging of fresh, minimally processed vegetable products (the fourth limitation) will also be addressed.
