Fundación Telefónica’s 42 Urduliz (Bizkaia), 42 Barcelona and 42 Málaga programming campuses are the venues for the world’s largest hackathon, NASA’s ‘Space Apps Challenge’.

Three of our programming campuses, 42 Málaga, 42 Urduliz (Bizkaia) and 42 Barcelona, ​​will host the world’s largest STEAM hackathon on October 7th and 8th, the Space Apps Challenge organized by NASA.

In its 12th edition, this two-day global gathering will bring together more than 31,000 people from around the world to solve 23 real-world challenges posed by NASA scientists and engineers. Its purpose should be visible. Open exchange of knowledge and data.

As a sign of the commitment we maintain at the Fundación to promoting STEAM talent, we joined this global call by offering three of the 42 programming campuses as venues to host the event’s celebration.

Complex 42 of Urdulis (Biscay), Barcelona and Málaga, which we set up together with the Provincial Council of Biscay, the City Council of Barcelona and the Generalitat of Catalonia; and Málaga City Council, Junta de Andalucia and Diputación de Málaga, respectively, will be one of the biggest events in the international arena of programming and technology.

The facility will allow team members to use software development, engineering, art, storytelling, science and other skills to solve science-related challenges written by NASA employees.

In addition, Espacio Fundación Telefónica will host the kick-off of the Madrid Hackathon, which will be held simultaneously and in coordination with the rest of Campus 42 and the city of León, where this hackathon will also be held.

Weekend challenges, space and lots of technology

The hackathon will bring together more than 300 people with different profiles in Spain: those with skills in programming, science, application development and technical solutions, as well as content creation or design. Promoted by NASA, it has the support of 9 space agencies from around the world and companies such as the US Embassy, ​​the Spanish Institute of Engineering (IIE), the Madri+d Foundation and Ecovidrio and Northern Design. To give visibility to technical talent, as we do at Fundación Telefónica.

Participating teams will develop mobile applications, software, hardware, data visualizations and platform solutions to address challenges directly designed by NASA to support space exploration missions and improve life on Earth.

The different challenges are aimed at all ages and learning levels with different skills and abilities. The challenges are very diverse, from software development to data science or content creation to discovery of stories.

Apart from the hackathon, throughout the weekend, the 42 programming campus will have different talks, presentations and workshops with experts and people related to the technology and aerospace sectors, who will share their experiences and knowledge with the participants.

Winners of this global event will have the opportunity to travel to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral (USA) to present their ideas to NASA experts.
