Former US national gymnastics team doctor Laurie Nassar was stabbed multiple times during a fight with another inmate at a Florida prison on Sunday, BBC partner CBS News reported.
Nassar, 59, was sentenced in 2018 to 175 years in prison for abusing several gymnasts.
According to local press, Nasser remains in a stable condition at a hospital after Sunday’s attack.
Jail sources told NBC that he suffered a collapsed lung after being stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest.
In a statement to the BBC, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said an inmate was assaulted at 14:35 EST (1835 GMT) Sunday at the Coleman prison in Florida, where the disgraced doctor is serving his sentence.
“Respondents took Immediate measures to save his lifeThe office said the inmate was transferred to a local hospital for “treatment and evaluation.” An internal investigation has been launched.
No prison staff or other inmates were injured in the incident.
