How did Father’s Day begin?

Most countries celebrate this holiday every third Sunday in June, part of a tradition that began in the United States. The date was pushed to 1910 Sonora Smart DotAfter realizing firsthand that they were also doing well, he decided to pay tribute to them with a date.

Sonora’s inspiration is her father Henry Jackson SmartA farmer who had served as a sergeant in the Civil War took on the responsibility of caring for her and her 5 siblings after their mother’s death.

Although Sonora’s proposal to grant a day to parents was initially rejected, it later began to gain traction among communities.

Originally, the pioneer of the date proposed the celebration on June 5 in honor of his father’s birthday, but the Spokane Ministerial Alliance of Washington chose the third Sunday of the sixth month of the year. Thus, the first Father’s Day in history was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

50 years later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as the date of celebration across the United States.

In 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday in June each year. This holiday has been adopted by other countries, although some do not celebrate it on the same date.
