The episode, titled “The Burning Mill”, premiered on June 30, 2024. In this second instalment, the plot not only advances the conflicts and intrigues of Dance of Dragons, but also introduces a major new piece. Complicating the power play in Westeros.

Who is Wolf the White?

In “Fire and Blood” by George RR Martin, Wolf the White emerges as one of the sinister “Black Dragons” during the tumultuous Dance of Dragons, a civil war between the Targaryen factions for control of the Iron Throne. Of humble origin, Ulf distinguished himself by becoming one of the few dragon riders, riding Silverwing, the dragon of the former Queen Alisan.

Ulf joins the Black Dragons after being dubbed the “Dragon Seed”. Targaryen bastards or those of Valyrian descent try to dominate the dragons of Dragonstone..

His white hair and reputation for drinking characterize him in the story. Despite his lack of formal education, Ulf proves to be an intriguing and decisive character in the tumultuous events of the Targaryen Civil War.

Is he really Daemon and Viserys’ half brother?

Although Wolf the White is mentioned in “Fire and Blood” as a “dragonseed” or Targaryen bastard, the book does not specify who his father or mother is. However, in the series, the character states that Belen Targaryen is the son of Viserys I and Daemon Targaryen’s father. This leaves a puzzling question: was this claim a decision by George RR Martin to establish the canon, or was it a ploy by Woolf, unusual for his dishonesty?

On the other hand, there is no basis in George RR Martin’s literature to suggest that Prince Balen is particularly treacherous or vicious. Instead, he is mentioned to have been madly in love with his wife and sister Alisa. After the death of Alyssa, who died from complications from a difficult birth, Balen rejected the advances of her other sister, Visera. On one memorable occasion, Viscera outsmarted the guards and snuck into Belon’s room, where she waited for him, naked and drunk. When Balen saw her, he immediately kicked her out.

So while Wulf is the White Daemon and Viserys’ half-brother, Balon’s provenance and character make this claim questionable.

What is the significance of Wolf the White in “House of the Dragon”?

Warning, spoiler alert. In the “House of the Dragon” series based on “Fire and Blood” by George RR Martin, Wolf the White plays one of the dragon riders during the raucous dance of dragons. Along with another dragonrider of humble origin, Hugh Hammer, Ulf Targaryen plays a significant role in the war between factions.

During A Dance of Dragons, Wolf distinguishes himself by switching sides on more than one occasion.

The character is known for his ambitious and opportunistic nature. As the war progressed, he realized that his interests might be better served by switching allegiances. The possibility of gaining more power and wealth by siding with Aegon II Targaryen becomes an irresistible temptation for him.
