Rimac Nevera is a clear example of how the battery compromises the construction of the car. Despite being the world's fastest electric car, it still weighs 2,150 kg as it carries a 120 kWh battery.

Mad Rimac's company is currently working with its applied engineering division Rimac Technology to develop the robotaxi. But the next product from automotive subsidiary Rimac Automobile will be a hyper sports car.

The reality is that the next Rimac will not be a battery electric car, but rather a vehicle that uses liquid fuel to generate electricity and continuously power the drivetrain.

There are many hybrids today that have a combustion engine that acts as a generator, but the difference is that the energy produced by combustion is first stored in a battery before being allocated to the electric drivetrain.

Speaking to British magazine Autocar, Matt Rimock revealed that his company is currently working on a solution that would allow the battery to be completely removed. And this translates into significant weight savings, resulting in gains in driving dynamics.

The idea is to work with the likes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), hydrogen and diesel, and heat them to extreme temperatures to generate electricity and power the drivetrain using a system called nanotubes.

According to Matt Rimac, a small company has begun testing this technology and the first results show an 80% burn efficiency. This percentage is 30% to 50%, much higher than conventional engines.

Obviously, a vehicle with these characteristics will have higher pollutant emissions than a purely electric one. However, the absence of a battery will have a positive impact on its production – it will be cleaner – and its final weight, which will be several hundred kilos lighter.

Another aspect where this technology could be transformative is that refueling is enough to regain full autonomy of the vehicle.
