France mobilizes 45,000 police officers to contain riots – DW – 06/30/2023

The French government will deploy 45,000 police and guards across the country, French Interior Minister Gerlal Turmanin announced to TF1 TV channel this Friday (06.30.2023). A 17-year-old boy was killed by a police officer Earlier this week.

For her part, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne said armored vehicles would also be mobilized from the gendarmerie, the military organization tasked with public security. A riot shook the country Three nights after the 17-year-old boy died.

Bourne’s office also announced the cancellation of large events that would require the deployment of multiple security forces or pose a risk to public order, steps taken hours earlier during the crisis meeting.

At the end of that meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that he would send more police officers to quell the unrest that followed the death of Nahel at the hands of a police officer during a traffic stop.

Since then, France has experienced nightly riots, with town halls, police stations and schools burned and shops looted. By Thursday night, authorities had made 40,000 agent stops and detained 875 people.
