The so-called third Taking Lima is the upcoming July 19 protest against Tina Polwart’s government. Mobilization of citizens from different parts of the country was announced. Local authorities are taking all precautionary measures in this regard.

General Roger Perez of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), head of the Lima Police Region, said it was not clear exactly which points the protesters would focus on, but that routes from previous protests would be taken into account to take preventive measures.

There are 28 points where the presence of protesters is expected, five of which – the most important- will have a heavy police presence: Congress of the Republic, Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Martín, Plaza Bolognese and the intersection of Abanque and Nicolas de Pirola avenues.

General Peres said there will be a total of 8,000 police in the capital with an additional presence of 3,000 troops.

Security cameras

The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima announced measures for the ’19J’ demonstrations, making available to the police 196 security cameras equipped with artificial intelligence systems that allow them to recognize the faces of protesters.

“I ask the police to redouble their efforts to find out who is coming to the points of entry into Lima and with what purpose. We must move forward. The national road network has been declared an emergency, this is another security measure through which we want to say to tourism that we are at peace and we want peace,” announced Lima’s mayor, Rafael López Aliaga.

Inside the country

Demonstrations have been announced not only in Lima, but also in several cities in the interior of the country. It is estimated that at least 21 regions will demonstrate against President Polwart’s government.

Police have moved about 1,000 agents to Panamericana Sur, high up in Ica, to crack down on road and trespassing in an area known as Chinatown.

In La Libertad, 470 law enforcement officers are employed, more than 4,500 in Junin, 2,000 in Arequipa and similar in various cities of the country.
