The study, led by researchers from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), reveals significant improvements in depression treatment through mobile apps, especially when the technology is combined with support from mental health professionals. The research, part of the EvalDepApps project funded by the Carlos III Health Institute, focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of apps available in the market for managing depression.

Technology and mental health: A fruitful combination

The research team’s review of the scientific literature identified 29 rigorous studies examining the effectiveness of mHealth interventions in the treatment of depression. The results suggest that these interventions have a moderate effect, and are more successful when combined with the participation of mental health professionals.

Application Verification Tool

The EvalDepApps project seeks to develop a tool to help patients and professionals identify the best apps for treating depression. According to Carme Carrion, principal researcher at the eHealth Lab, current apps often lack scientific evidence supported by professionals or patients.

User preferences and treatment personalization

The study reveals that users prefer apps that are simple and understandable, showing a clear preference for apps that are easy to use rather than those that offer too many options. Also, as the severity of depression increases, the tendency of users to use these apps increases.

Andrea Duarte, principal investigator of this meta-analysis, highlights the need for personalized approaches that take into account individual differences and points to the importance of prioritizing evidence-based principles and standardized assessment tools.

The future of technology in mental health care

Although the introduction of technology into mental health treatment is still in development, researchers agree that it is an avenue worth exploring. The need for validated and standardized technical tools is highlighted to improve treatment efficiency and health system efficiency.
