Avoid 5G scams by criminals

The deployment of the 5G network in Colombia has generated great interest among users eager to take advantage of the speed and performance this technology offers. However, this development has also attracted the attention of fraudsters who want to take advantage of the situation.

On Friday, February 23, the Ministry of ICT officially announced that the operations of the 5G network will begin in the country. It is important to highlight that even if the network is operational, its implementation across the national territory will be progressive as operators gain authorization to deploy it.

Since the first day of its implementation, there have been reported cases of fraudsters using the news to dupe unsuspecting citizens. Using fraudulent phone calls and text messages, these individuals pose as telecom consultants and offer to activate 5G networks on victims' mobile devices.

In this situation, operators like Claro have issued warnings, urging people not to fall for the scams of these fraudsters.

It is important to remember that to access the 5G network, you only need a compatible mobile device and the service of an operator authorized to provide this technology, such as Claro, Movistar, Tigo, WOM and the new operator Telecall.

Legitimate operators never ask for personal information through calls or messages, and they never ask users to access unknown links or download paid apps.

5G network activation will be automatic on mobile devices once operators install new compatible antennas in different coverage areas, which will be carried out throughout the year.

Users who already own a 5G-compatible device will be able to connect to their operator's network when they are in coverage areas, without having to change the SIM card.

However, those who do not yet have a compatible device can continue to use current networks without any problems or, if they wish, can upgrade their device to a 5G compatible one without changing the SIM card. The important thing is to ensure that you keep your device updated with the latest version of the operating system.
