Explosions rock Kiev after Russian strike: live updates

The death toll from a Russian rocket attack on an apartment building in the central Ukrainian city of Uman reached at least 23 on Friday, one of the deadliest single incidents for civilians in Ukraine this year.

Deliberately or recklessly attacking civilians is considered a war crime. In total, at least 8,574 civilians have been killed and 14,441 injured since Russia invaded in February 2022. Recent data from the United Nations warns that the true figures are far from real more Moscow, for its part, denies targeting civilians, despite evidence to the contrary.

Here’s a list of some other deadly episodes for civilians since Russia began its full-scale invasion.


Kharkiv city

Few places in Ukraine were hit harder than Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city after the capital, in the early weeks of Russia’s invasion. In mid-March 2022, Russian rocket and missile attacks on apartments and public buildings killed at least 500 civilians, according to local officials. According to United Nations data, that month was the deadliest in the war for civilians.

Mariupol Theater

A Russian airstrike destroyed a theater in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol on March 16. The word “children” was written in large white letters outside to show that civilians were taking shelter in the building. Amnesty International said in a statement that at least a dozen people had been killed “and many more”. Survivors told a reporter for The New York Times that between 60 and 200 people had been killed. The attack came during the siege of the city, which fell to Russian forces in May. The top UN human rights official said Mariupol was “the deadliest place in Ukraine” in the first three months of the war.

Kramatorsk Railway Station

On April 8, Russian forces shelled a train station in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk province, killing more than 50 civilians. Civilians, including women and children, were fighting and fleeing the province. The offensive heralded the start of Russia’s campaign to seize the entire Donbass region.

Kremenchuk Shopping Mall

A Russian missile strike on June 27 killed 20 people and wounded 59 others on a shopping mall in Kremenchuk, an industrial city in Ukraine’s central Poltava region, a senior government official said.

Chasiv Yar Apartment

A July 9 Russian strike on an apartment complex in Chasiv Yar, a small town in Donetsk province, killed at least 43 people, according to local emergency services. Ukrainian officials said Russian forces used multiple rocket launchers in the attack.

Vinnytsia Shopping Center

Russian cruise missiles struck a business center, dance studio and wedding hall in Vinnytsia, hundreds of miles away in central Ukraine, on July 14. At least 23 people were killed, including a 4-year-old girl. Down syndrome.

Zaporizhia Convoy

At least 30 people were killed and 88 injured when Russian missiles hit vehicles carrying people fleeing fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine on September 30.


Dnipro Apartment Building

A heavy-duty anti-ship missile exploded on January 15 in a dense Ukrainian cityscape of houses and shops, destroying a nine-story apartment building. 46 people including 6 children died in this protest.
