— PyroWave introduces nanorefining technology: a revolutionary short-cycle chemical recycling innovation to remove toxic additives and contaminants from plastics
BRUSSELS , Sept. 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — On the sidelines of the Chemical Recycling Europe Forum 2023, PyroWave is proud to present its revolutionary nanorefining technology. Applied to plastic waste, this technology works at the molecular level to remove impurities from polymers with precise control over refined resins. It specifically addresses a challenge faced by most plastic waste recyclers, including advanced recycling: the presence of contaminants in plastic waste and pyrolysis oil.
In a world facing growing concern about plastic pollution, one of the factors limiting the expansion of plastic recycling is the impossibility of obtaining raw materials that conform to the level of purity required in end-uses. A recent United Nations report highlights the problems posed by the handling of hazardous chemicals in plastics, additives and contaminants that pose serious risks to human health and the environment. Pyrowave’s solution provides pretreatment of plastic waste to purify resins that can be used in advanced pollutant-sensitive recycling systems or directly in end-use applications. This innovative approach has the potential to expand the range of recyclable plastics, including plastics containing various impurities and additives such as heavy metals, inorganic pigments, halogens and flame retardants.
“We cannot stand by while the plastic pollution crisis worsens and recycling rates improve,” explained Jocelyn Doucet, CEO of PyroWave. “As pioneers in the field, we are tackling the major challenge of scaling advanced recycling techniques by delivering innovative nanorefining technology that makes a real difference to a cleaner, healthier planet,” said Jocelyn Doucet, co-founder and CEO. Revolutionary recycling: how nanorefining works
PyroWave’s nanopurification method is inspired by pharmaceutical purification technologies and takes advantage of the significant size differences between most additives found in polymers and compounds. The technology is based on the large difference in size and solubility to separate additives from polymers using highly advanced nanofiltration membranes. Unlike conventional dissolution methods that rely solely on solubility, PyroWave’s patent-pending technology allows for the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants while maintaining precise control over the endpoint. The result is a simpler process, tailored to our customers’ specifications, more efficient from an energy point of view and more economical.
A harbinger of a greener future
To prevent access to plastic raw material, Pyrowave standardizes the upstream material in accordance with the most advanced recycling process. Also, the purified product can be directly used in end applications. Pyrowave has successfully demonstrated this technology by purifying polymers and providing high-quality recycled plastics to industries requiring strict compliance, including food contact applications. The invention can be used independently to purify various raw materials from plastic waste or as a pre-treatment to its microwave depolymerization process.
Powered by electricity, PyroWave’s new technology is low carbon, producing approximately 95% reduction in GHG emissions and 100% traceable resins compared to virgin resin production. PyroWave’s solution allows for higher recycling rates, fewer environmentally harmful materials and lower GHG emissions than required to produce virgin plastic. Pyrowave’s innovation promises to reshape the plastic recycling landscape by directly addressing the pressing environmental issue of toxic contaminants in plastics.
Backed by over 10 years of experience, PyroWave looks forward to collaborating with like-minded partners to create a sustainable, circular economy that maximizes the value of plastic waste. To learn more about PyroWave’s nanorefining technology, get in touch today.
