San Luis defeated Rayados del Monterrey 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Apertura 2023 Mexican soccer tournament. In the first leg of the clash, Ricardo Chavez scored for San Luis.
The second leg of the series between the second place in the regular season (Rayados) against the seventh place (San Luis) will take place this Saturday at BBVA Stadium, home of Monterrey.
San Luis put pressure on Monterrey from the first minutes of the fight, and after errors by Dieter Villalbando in the 5th minute and Jürgen Tam in the 15th minute, they took the lead on the scoreboard.
At the age of 21, Tom provided a late serve to Chavez, who fired a right-footed shot past Argentina goalkeeper Esteban Andrada’s left post to make it 1-0.
Rayados didn’t react and San Luis continued to be the most dangerous team in the game in the second half, although Frenchman Sebastien Salles-lamonge in the 46th and 60th and another shot by Venezuela missed the target. John Murillo, aged 74.
Less than two hours earlier, a goal from Uruguayan Nicolás ‘Tiente’ López earned León Apertura a 2-2 draw against Aguilas del América in the first leg of their quarter-final series.
The series ends this Saturday with a return fight at Aguilas’ home, Azteca Stadium.
