Nels Coxman, operator of the only snowplow in Kehoe’s fictional city of Denver (Liam Neeson), is recognized as ‘Citizen of the Year’, his son Kyle (Michael Neeson) is abducted, beaten, drugged and killed by kidnappers who also attack a colleague who works as a cargo director at the local airport.

Up to this point we have been talking about “revenge” or “revenge below zero” (“Cold Pursuit“, as it’s titled in English), is an adaptation of the 2014 Norwegian film “One After Another” starring Stellan Skarsgård and directed by Hans-Peter Molland. The same director adapted this two-hour black comedy into an Americanized version that hit theaters in July 2019.

in”Revenge”, Nels Coxman leads a smooth life. He lives in a beautiful cabin with his wife Grace (played by the talented Laura Dern) and the aforementioned Kyle. Precisely on the day their son was abducted, they could be seen together on stage. Although they appear to be a narrow but understanding family, everything is torn apart by tragedy.

Kehoe, the fictional town where the events take place, is a small town that combines tourism with beautiful mountains covered in snow year-round. This is recognized by the only sheriff in the place, John ‘Gill’ Kipski (John Doman), who welcomes a brand new colleague, Kim Dash (Emmy Rossum). He, with his years of experience in this city, turns blind as residents and tourists scold him for the frivolity he takes.

Of course, Kehoe, in the name of tourism and the foreign exchange it generates, is like many towns that don’t rule out crime, drug consumption or the commission of a foul. However, there is something that makes things worse in this city located in Denver: the presence of a terrible mafia war related to all kinds of drug trafficking.

In this order, “Revenge” Nothing wrong with showing us a variety of villains. All are often presided over by two ringleaders. The first is a millionaire drug dealer identified as ‘Viking’ Trevor Calcott (Tom Bateman), a cretin with a penchant for healthy eating, who has a perpetual conflict with his nanny wife Aya (Julia Jones) over the custody of their only son, Ryan (Michelle Holmes). And the second is even more extravagant. We are talking about White Bull (Tom Jackson), a kind of leader of an Indian community who uses his power – with the support of his lieutenants – to confront the ‘Viking’ described above.

As for the writing phase, “Revenge” seems aptly stated. We have a mafia war going on in a peaceful area where no one wants problems. Check out Sheriff Gil Kipski, who doesn’t hide his discomfort when his partner Kim begins to put order in the midst of extreme neglect. This is not a corrupt officer but a willfully negligent officer.

This false sense of peace that falls on Kehoe is precisely shattered the night Kyle is kidnapped and drugged. It is from here that the film develops and emerges as a black comedy in which each of Coxman’s victims – a father with unknown murderous powers – is told on screen (name, nickname and funeral).

Since everyone knows the town, this snowblow operator has the luxury of killing the ‘Viking’s’ attackers one by one without realizing his responsibility. When he decides to go to his brother to tell him of his plan to avenge his son’s death, he first tries to warn him, but quickly gives up on his thirst for revenge.

Most of the elements that adorn this ill-fated journey of Coxman’s are highly caricatured. The fearsome ‘Viking’ is upset that he gave his son a sandwich with unhealthy ingredients and succumbs to his wife’s hit men, going so far as to kill the guy Coxman paid to kill him in his room. In fact, many of the situations we see on screen are fundamentally contradictory.

Heads being shipped as trophies, killing people, rolling them up on racks and dumping them in the valley without anyone knowing, White Bull discovers the coxman’s brother’s Asian wife yelling at them both in Japanese to “stay out of trouble”. The clothes sold in the stores are made in China, or Coxman asking the victims who the best quarterback in NFL history is, is certainly an array of elements that will make you laugh, but cannot be justified.

If we turn to the personal side of our protagonist, things are not better either. We move from one family with no obvious problems to another that suddenly reveals all its differences (Laura Dern beating Liam Neeson into his truck is the most dramatic moment in the film’s two hours, nothing more). So, now separated – incredibly without giving up his status as the local Snowplow – Coxman seems to have more time to pursue his plan of revenge, against the Vikings and his people.

Regarding the level of action and violence, “RevengeCertainly follows the pattern of some of Liam Neeson’s best films since the masterpiece of the genre titled “Relentless Pursuit”. Directed by Hans Peter Molland, the Irishman (now 70 years old) can be grouped into the category of stories where the Irishman (now 70 years old) was and is not a former law enforcement agent. For this reason perhaps it is the primitive way in which he manages to make his evil plan come true.

But as the snowblow operator seizes any moment of the day to finish off those responsible for his son Kyle’s death (which is little or no mention after the initial tragic event), the focus is stolen by the secondary. Characters like Detective Kim Dash, who uses her skills to uncover the hell that surrounds Kehoe. Although her superior sometimes warns that it is better not to touch too much to avoid problems, she insists and tries to get as close to the truth as possible.

“Revenge“There is no better picture Liam Neeson. It is full of inconsistencies, irregular elements and caricature characters. The presence of the Irish actor and his legacy in action cinema are the only elements that justify why streaming has become so watched and talked about again, despite its release in theaters four years ago.
