With the end of the year just a few weeks away, most people are gearing up for the holidays. Christmas, which refers to Catholicism. However, it dates back to the Advent wreath used by believers in the Middle Ages, and nowadays it is common to see it on the door of the house or on the table.

What is an arrival evening?

Three priests, Silverio Osorio, Aguilar and Víctor Jiménez, used their social networks to explain to Catholics the meaning of the Advent wreath and how this representation prepares us to celebrate the coming of the baby Jesus. Below, we describe the elements that make up the crown:

• Round shape: The circular shape represents God’s eternal love without beginning or end. And it shows that our love for God and neighbor should never end.
• Green Branches: These branches grow from the pine, which means immortality, because in winter all trees lose their color and greenness, while the pine always maintains its green branches. It is the color of hope and life.
• Candles: They represent that Christ is the light of the world, who removes the coldness of sin and accompanies us in the midst of pain and sorrow.
• Garnishes and Fruits: They express the love of God on the cross. This is the joy that the Savior brings us. Also, they can be a reflection of good deeds done by man.

On what date is Advent celebrated?

• First Sunday of Advent: It begins this Sunday, December 3, and the purple candle is lit.
• Second Sunday of Advent: It is celebrated on December 10 and a second purple candle is lit.
• Third Sunday of Advent: Also known as Gaudete Sunday, it is celebrated on December 17 with the lighting of pink candles.
• Fourth Sunday of Advent: It falls on December 24 and is celebrated by lighting the last purple candle. Optionally, some Catholics light a white candle on Christmas, December 25.
